On April 19th, 2008, Kalib Starnes forever doomed himself to star in one of the most endlessly replayable moments in UFC history.
His UFC 83 "fight" with Nate Quarry is as daft today as it was back then. No more than a lesson in avoidance, it saw Starnes duck, dodge, and run away from his opponent for three full rounds. It was almost as if he was trying to throw the fight, and Kalib, a British Columbia native, was jeered out of the building by a Montreal crowd vociferous in its support of all other Canadians.
Unsurprisingly, Starnes lost a unanimous decision with scores of 30-27, 30-26, and an unprecedented 30-24. Worse news would follow two days later, when Dana White announced that Kalib had been cut from the organisation, stating that after the way Starnes carried on against Quarry, "he should consider a new line of work."
Starnes' name immediately became a buzzword for embarrassment. He continued fighting for smaller companies, but the former Ultimate Fighter competitor was never welcomed back to the UFC, and his career's defining legacy remains a gif of him circling away from a mocking Quarry.
