10 Worst WWE Moments Of 2007
9. A Sorry End For The Cruiserweight Title
Hornswoggle was bloody everywhere in 2007, man. He won the Cruiserweight Title in a ‘Cruiserweight Open’ match at The Great American Bash. On the night, lil' Swoggle dethroned ex-champ Chavo Guerrero, but others involved included Jamie Noble (boy), Funaki, Shannon Moore and Jimmy Wang Yang. This was a new low for the belt, because Hornswoggle was a comedy character for the kiddies.
Things somehow got worse for the Cruiser division. On the 28 September SmackDown, brand GM Vickie Guerrero (she'd started as Teddy's assistant before getting the gig full time) stripped Swoggle of his gold and deactivated the title. That was that. Cruiserweight gold wasn’t seen in WWE again until 2016 when the Cruiserweight Classic debuted and 205 Live became a "new" concept for the company.
The final match for that original belt was Hornswoggle vs. Noble on the 31 August ’07 SmackDown. It was a sad end for a title that technically had lineage stretching back to WCW. Think back to classics like Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero from Halloween Havoc 1997, or all of those stunning bouts involving Chris Jericho, Dean Malenko, Shane Helms and others. They were ancient history in the blink of an eye.
It sucked when WWE merged the Intercontinental Title with the newer World Heavyweight Championship in 2002, and it sucked when they tanked the Cruiserweight division completely 5 years later. How did we get from Rey vs. Eddie to wee Hornswoggle staring down at the title with a melancholy look on his face?!
Vickie ending a belt her husband had been associated with in a rival company sounds like the answer to a trivia question.
