10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (Nov 6)

2. Simon Gotch Invented 'Figure 8' Name For Charlotte

It's already proving difficult for Charlotte to emerge from the shadow of her more-famous father, 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair. As a child, the current WWE Divas Champion watched as her dad cemented his legacy as one of the most cherished wrestlers in the entire industry. Since 2012, Charlotte has worked really hard to create her own path in the wrestling business, and has been a crucial part of the 'female revolution' currently ongoing in WWE. One of the most visually exciting parts of Charlotte's act is the 'Figure 8' finishing hold she employs. The move is a twist on her father's 'Figure 4' submission hold, one that became synonymous with Ric Flair. This week, Charlotte talked about how the move came to be, and it has an interesting origin story. Training in NXT, Charlotte began simply using the Figure 4 to finish off training matches. Her chief trainer, Sara Del Ray, thought she needed something different from her dad to help her stand out. Merely looking on during the session, Simon Gotch offered his input that Charlotte should bridge out of the Figure 4 to make it look unique. He also named the move the Figure 8, saying it would stop critics, because it was more flashy than Ric's original hold.
