13 Things We Learned From The Undertaker On Joe Rogan Experience
12. Talking Steroids And Drug Testing
In the early part of this most recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan and the Undertaker discuss the presence of drugs and steroids in the wrestling industry.
On why the then-WWF started doing drug tests back in the '90s, 'Taker explained:
"They didn’t want people getting popped, getting pulled over [and] the cops finding weed in the car. So that would be a fine. You’d get fined a little bit this time, the second time you’d get fined a little more, the third time you’d get fined and maybe have to go to rehab. What they figured out, and what they still do, when they took that away, what are you gonna do? You’re gonna drink more, you’re gonna take more pills, ‘cos you’ve gotta cope with the pain somehow. So then you’ve got guys overdosing, right? So everything’s kind of led up to this drug protocol now. We’re talking, we didn’t have doctors with us at the time, we didn’t even have trainers with us back then. Now we travel with trainers, doctors, there’s all kinds of protocols."
Bringing up steroids, Joe Rogan said that he'd make sure that every wrestler was on steroids if he was in charge of WWE.
Detailing his own experience with steroids, Undertaker chimed in:
"There was a time where everybody had to be big, you had to be jacked. Especially the 6’8” big guys. There was the stigma [that] you’ve gotta be 300 lbs. It’s in our head. Nobody gives a sh*t, they’re interested in the characters and what you do on TV, but in our heads, ‘F**k, I’ve gotta be 330 lbs!’"
The Phenom added that WWE talent now have to do four urine tests and two blood tests per year, with those tests being sprung on individuals on a random basis. He also admitted that he's no idea how the stars of today are able to maintain their physiques.
"There’s some big motherf**kers out there, and cut, and I don’t know how they did it. I couldn’t get that way when I was on steroids."
Interestingly, when Rogan was shown a picture of a jacked Braun Strowman, he was in disbelief that someone could be that big and that shredded without using steroids.
