10 Barcelona Signings Who Completely Flopped At The Nou Camp

5. Phillippe Christanval

A full French international, Barcelona signed Christanval back in 2001 after being impressed with his form for French giants, Monaco.

Chirstanval was brought to the Nou Camp in the hope he could be the classy ball playing centre-half the club longed for at the time. Coming off the back of French national team success which had seen them capture the World Cup in 98 before landing the European Championship two years later, hopes were understandably high for the Frenchman.

It wasn't to be for Christanval though, as just 31 appearances followed in two seasons in Spain before he moved back to his homeland with Marseille.

Christanval struggled to impact the first XI at Barcelona as an emerging Carles Puyol cemented himself as a mainstay of the defence, while experienced heads like Frank De Boer made things even more difficult for him.

In terms of expectation, the French defender goes down as a massive flop at 'Barca'. He finished his career in the Premier League with Fulham in 2009 after a somewhat inconsistent spell at Craven Cottage.
