It's hard to pin-point too many players who have seen such a fall from grace after moving to Barcelona as Thomas Vermaelen did.

Signed by the club after a hugely impressive spell in the Premier League with Arsenal, Vermaelen had developed a reputation in England as one of the most aggressive and consistent performers in his position.

Gunners fans were suitably gutted as he made the move to the Nou Camp, but it proved to be the start of quite the demise for the Belgian.

Vermaelen suffered with various injuries and was rarely fit or used as the club continued its reign of success in La Liga and across Europe.

A loan spell with Roma only brought less than ten appearances, and he is currently over in Japan after finally sealing a move away from Spain.

In terms of defensive rocks who have gone from near world's best to not even being close to being good enough for top European football, Vermaelen is right up there.
