Aymeric Laporte may be Manchester City's most expensive signing of all time and contributed admirably to the team's brilliant Premier League win, but none of that seems to count too much in the eyes of Didier Deschamps, who has almost inexplicably chosen the likes of Marseille's 32-year-old and widely-criticised centre back Adil Rami for his final squad instead.

23-year-old Laporte was a rock for Bilbao in La Liga and has demonstrated his talents in the Premier League too, proving to be a composed, reliable presence in the heart of defence for Pep Guardiola's outfit. He could surely have made a big impact for France, but fate has chosen otherwise.

Laporte can't be taking the news too well, especially as he originally hesitated at offering his allegiance to Spain, but was called up for a couple of qualifying games by Deschamps, who seemed to promise him that he had a future with Les Bleus. He's still young and could attend future tournaments, but might have been better off choosing Spain after all.
