Like Marcos Alonso, Cesc Fabregas is another top quality Spain and Chelsea player who seems to have paid the price for his club's relatively disappointing domestic season. The former Arsenal and Barcelona man hasn't quite got the pace or explosiveness of his early years, but remains a highly consistent and creative playmaker, supplying plenty of key passes per match.

At the age of 31, this might have been Fabregas' final chance of winning another World Cup with Spain. He'll be gutted to miss out after playing a big part in the team's 2010 success, as well as their 2008 and 2012 European Championship triumphs, but he hasn't pulled on a Spain shirt since 2016.

With old heads like Silva, Iniesta, and Busquets taking up some space on the plane to Russia, combined with several other midfielders at the peak of their talents like Isco, Koke and Thiago, there just wasn't any room for Fabregas in this summer's Spain World Cup squad.
