Ilkay Gundogan was a key member during Dortmund's renaissance years under Jurgen Klopp, a midfield lynchpin who dictated his side's tempo and combined creativity with accurate passes for the attackers to flourish.

Brought in from SC Freiburg in 2011 to replace Real Madrid-bound Nuri Sahin, not everything was sunshine and rainbows at the start.

The German international struggled to acclimatise to life at Dortmund, but 'positive attitude' and 'willingness to learn', according to Klopp, soon turned him into a pivotal figure.

Gundogan won three trophies and scored 16 times in 157 appearances, including the penalty in the Champions League final loss to Bayern Munich. His time at the North-Rhine Westphalia was riddled with injuries, but that didn't deter him from having positive on-field impact.

He was sold to Manchester City in 2016 and continued to excel under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola.
