In 2013, Spurs sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record transfer fee of £85.3 million. Of course, Spurs fans were disappointed at the fact that they had lost their best player - and a true superstar - but Bale had forced his way out by rebelling and they had to accept that there was no way he'd play for the club again. Consequently, the club brought in seven new players. On three occasions during the spending spree, Spurs' transfer record was broken, with Paulinho (£17 million), Roberto Soldado (£26 million) and Erik Lamela (£30 million) all surpassing the cost of any players the Lilywhites had previously signed throughout history. Of course, the season wasn't exactly successful and only Christian Eriksen could truly be considered to have performed well out of the newbies, but the ambition shown in spending so much was very novel, enjoyable to witness and extremely promising for Spurs fans (and, of course, it could all still come together this season).
