Two years after the win at Manchester City, Spurs finished fourth again in the Premier League. The 2011-12 season looked to be another glorious one and fans of the Lilywhites were eagerly anticipating another assault on the Champions League - but it was not to be. Chelsea - who finished sixth in the Premier League that season, behind Newcastle United in fifth - pulled a rabbit out of the proverbial hat by winning the Champions League that same year. So, despite not finishing in a domestic position worthy of qualifying for Europe's elite competition, the fact that they somehow managed to win the same competition that very year resigned fourth place Spurs to the far less glamorous Europa League. It was truly heartbreaking and devastating for the club and its fans, as a season's worth of hard work was undone by virtue of a penalty shoot-out victory for the Blues against Bayern Munich. Still, the temporary euphoria of finishing fourth and anticipating Europe's biggest stage - and the achievement of finishing above the champions of Europe - was certainly good for a while.
