2. New England Patriots 20 St Louis Rams 17 (Super Bowl XXXVI)
Yet another Super Bowl shock came in 2002 when the underdog New England Patriots led by Tom Brady triumphed over Kurt Warner and the St Louis Rams at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. Just the three points scored in the first quarter of Super Bowl XXXVI (36) when Jeff Wilkins kicked a 50 yard field goal to put the Rams 3-0 up. New England hit two touchdowns in the second quarter starting with a Ty Law interception which he ran 47 yards back the other way for the score. With just 0:31 seconds left in the half, Brady hit David Patten in the endzone to put the AFC Champions up 14-3 at the half. Like in the first quarter, the third only consisted of a successful field goal effort, this time to the Patriots as kicker Adam Vinatieri put Bill Bilicheck's team up 17-3 heading into the fourth. St Louis came out firing in the final period though taking five and a half minutes to get their first touchdown of the game through a Warner 2 yard rush. The game was tied with 1:30 remaining after St Louis' Ricky Proehl took a 26 yard reception from Warner to give the Rams hope of forcing the game into overtime. The Patriots would however, have one final drive to try and win it in regulation. Starting from their own 21 yard line, Brady was clinical during the final drive being forced to throw the ball away once and not throwing a single incomplete pass he moved the Patriots into field goal range. Kicker Vinatieri kicked a successful 48 yard field goal as time expired to give the Patriots their first Super Bowl championship. Once again the Super Bowl was decided in the final seconds this time handing the title to the underdog with a young inexperienced quarterback at the helm eventually taking the game MVP prize.
