10 Best Tennis Comebacks Of All Time
6. Gasquet Def Roddick - 2007 Wimbledon
The Frenchman, seeded 12th, seemed to be
out and packing his bags after a comfortable first set and subsequent tie break
in the second set of the 2007 quarterfinal. However after big server Andy
Roddick double faulted in game fourteen to set up the break, an inspiring
comeback was mounted against the two time finalist.
Once the break came Gasquet took his lifeline, and started pulling off incredible shots that left even Roddick shaking his head in disbelief. Roddick wasn’t doing anything wrong, indeed he was playing incredibly well with very few unforced errors. However by the end of the match Gasquet had racked up a phenomenal 93 winners, with the majority off his backhand - most players' weaker shot.
Gasquet was noted as stating ''After losing two sets I decided
to play more aggressively, to play with my backhand, to go to the net and serve
better’’ It worked to his credit and the Frenchman passed the American into the
Semi Finals.
Richard Gasquet (FRA) Beats Andy Roddick (USA) 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3), 8-6.
