There's an element of praise to be given towards Liverpool and England legend Michael Owen, in that he took the plunge and opted for a move abroad when staying in the comforts of the Premier League was the easy option.

He moved to Madrid back in 2004 following the sacking of Reds manager Gerard Houllier, and despite hitting the net on 13 occasions, he never produced the form he'd shown at Anfield.

Owen's time in Madrid was best remembered for the fact he had become something of a super-sub at the Bernabeu. While it yielded some goals and got him in the good books with some fans, it was never going to be enough for a player who'd been the top scorer for Liverpool over a number of seasons.

The speedy England man moved back to England after only a year in the Spanish capital, with a move to Newcastle United making Madrid a tidy profit.

However, from here Owen's career went drastically downhill as a serious injury curtailed his progress at St James' Park and ultimately cost him his career.
