10 Biggest Dodged Bullets In Liverpool Transfer History
10. Clint Dempsey
When Brendan Rodgers arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2012, he quickly set his stall out to bring in new faces at the club. High up on his list was USA international Clint Dempsey, who had just scored 23 goals in 46 appearances for Fulham the previous season. It was thought that the then 29-year-old would bring goals, experience and depth to Rodgers' squad, but instead of joining Liverpool he opted for Tottenham instead. It was a big transfer victory for Spurs at the time, particularly as they were in direct competition with the Reds for a possible Champions League place during the 2012/13 season. As it happened, Dempsey was a flop at White Hart Lane, and left many at Liverpool breathing a huge sigh of relief that they didn't waste money acquiring the American's signature. He was often a substitute, and more than once he bore the brunt of the home supporters' anger, following yet another forgettable display. He only lasted one season in north London, before jointing Seattle Sounders in the summer of 2013. 12 goals in 43 games was far from a terrible return at Tottenham, but he is most certainly a player Liverpool dodged a bullet in failing to sign.
