5. Diego Maradona - Barcelona To Napoli (£6.9 million)diego maradonna Regarded by many as the greatest player of all time, Diego Armando Maradona completely changed the fortunes of Napoli, and will forever remain a cult hero in Naples. Following an injury plagued spell at Barcelona, Maradona was purchased by Napoli for a world record transfer fee - the second of his career-, and entered his prime. Maradona, almost single-handedly transformed an unsuccessful team from the south of Italy into a title-winning side that continuously posed a threat to its more decorated rivals in the North. Pre and post Maradona, Napoli have failed to emulate the successes of his era. Their only two Serie A titles coming in the '86/'87 and '89/'90 campaigns, as well as their solitary Uefa Cup success in 1989. However, in typical Maradona fashion, his time in Naples was not without its controversy. He was sentenced to a 15 month ban following the 1990 World Cup - which was staged in Italy- and would never play for the Neapolitan club ever again. Yet, while Maradona left Italy in disgrace, he is still worshipped by the Napoli faithful, and the club have duly retired his number 10 jersey.
