10 Biggest Head-Scratching Upsets In UFC History

6. Alistair Overeem vs Antonio 'Bigfoot' Silva, UFC 156

Result: Silva by KO (punches) in the 3rd round. This upset is of particular annoyance to me and left me not only scratching my head but also yelling profanities at my television screen. Overeem to beat Silva was the last selection I needed in my accumulator bet to win £280 involving not just MMA but also Basketball, Football and Boxing. I had already spent my winnings in my head and with good reason; the match-up of the seemingly slow and clumsy Bigfoot against the high level kick boxing and athleticism of Overeem seemed certain to end with Overeem's hand raised. UFC.com reported that before the fight Overeem had gone to the press criticising Silva:
€œSee how he moves. He's big, he's slow, he's sluggish. €œI have more combinations, more power, more speed. He's a huge, walking target and I'm pretty good at striking, so one plus one equals two€.
However, Overeem's mathematics proved to be spectacularly wrong as Silva displayed the power he sacrificed his agility for, knocking the Dutchman out with a surprisingly fluid combination in the 3rd round.
