7. Randy 'The Natural' Couture vs Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell, UFC 43
Result: Couture by TKO (punches) in the 3rd round. In the Summer of 2003 Randy Couture's MMA career was on dire straights. Not only was he on the wrong side of 40 in a sport where fighters like Dan Henderson were yet to prove that being middle-aged didn't necessarily discount you from competing at the top level but he was also coming off tough loses to Ricco Rodriguez and Josh Barnett (to whom he conceded his Heavyweight title). On the other hand, Liddell had rapidly became a fan favourite in the Octagon for his aggressive sprawl-and-brawl style and well evidenced knock out power and had remained undefeated in the UFC for 7 fights. Many of Couture's friends and family reputedly tried to encourage The Natural to go into retirement before the fight. However, Couture silenced the doubters by avoiding Liddell's renowned kill-shots and implementing his NCAA Division 1 standard wrestling to get the win via ground-and-pound.
