10 Biggest Newcastle United Controversies In The Premier League Era

6. Shepherd, Hall And The Fake Sheikh

Arguably this was Freddy Shepherd's most famous performance in the Geordie millionaires two-decade association with Newcastle and came about when he and Douglas Hall were unwitting victims of the News of the World€™s €˜Fake Sheikh€™. Oh boy did it land them in hot water. The story goes that they were drinking in what was believed to be a Spanish brothel somewhere in Marbella when Shepherd delivered this infamous line. "Newcastle girls are dogs. England is full of them. Me, I like blondes, big bust, good legs. I don't like coloured girls. I want a lesbian show with handcuffs." It didn€™t stop there as the crass double act ridiculed Alan Shearer, branding him €œMary Poppins€, and derided us loyal supporters for the pride in which we wore our black and white shirts. When their tawdry conduct hit the front pages Shepherd and Hall were rightly ostracised from the club for 10 months following a venomous backlash from the Toon faithful.
