At the time of this fight, Frank Mir was the UFC’s up-and-coming golden boy. On a four fight win streak and being built as the next big thing, UFC had him second top of the bill for their first card in England, where he faced UK MMA veteran, Ian ‘The Machine’ Freeman.

Freeman had lost four of his previous six bouts and just days before the fight he was hit with devastating news that his father had brain cancer and was given days to live.

Mir had won his first four fights all by way of submission and went looking for a tap straight away, even popping ‘The Machines’ knee out of place in the process. Freeman didn’t let this stop him and pounded away at Mir’s head until he was eventually free.

From there, Freeman pinned Mir up against the cage and unleashed a huge amount of elbows and punches before he stood back up. Mir was instructed to get to his feet by the referee but fell back to his knees after standing for seconds. The contest was waved off and Freeman walked away the victor.
