10 Boyhood Man Utd Fans The Club Should Have Signed
8. John Terry
“I was Man United growing up. You know what it’s like when you’re a boy, you want to support the team that’s winning everything. And my dad and granddad were Man United fans.” - John Terry, May 2006.
He may be Mr. Chelsea now, having spent the last 21 years at Stamford Bridge, but it’s well-documented that his heart was taken by another during his childhood. Revered for his passion to the London Blue, there was once a time when he only had eyes for the seemingly unstoppable force at Old Trafford - Sir Alex Ferguson’s winning juggernaut that he would end up derailing during the mid-00’s with the help of a wealthy Russian oligarch.
The 35-year-old is one of the finest centre-halves to have ever graced the Premier League, if not the greatest of them all. Had the Red Devils stolen someone with his leadership skills and influence from under the noses of a team who would go on to pose a threat to their English dominance, it would have provided a major boost for the men in red. And boy did they try.
“I met Sir Alex Ferguson - great to meet. During the school holidays I would go up to Manchester and train with their boys for two weeks, play a few games and come home. But one thing that was really special about Man United was that Alex Ferguson took time out and invited me to one of their games and to have lunch with their players. I think it was hard for my dad to take that I was going to sign for Chelsea.” - John Terry, May 2006.
Then again, considering their last Champions League success came courtesy of John Terry’s slipped boot, perhaps it worked out for the best to have left him in London?
