10 Boyhood Man Utd Fans The Club Should Have Signed

2. Eric Dier

“When I was growing up Roy Keane was a player I loved. If the offer (from Man United) came today, I wouldn’t say I’d take it because I’m not sure it’s the right time. But if I cemented my place in Sporting’s first team and felt I was ready, then it would be very hard to turn down.” - Eric Dier, August 2010.

Whatever Roy Keane was paid at Manchester United, it clearly wasn’t enough considering how many extra supporters the club seemed to gain because of his all-action displays in the middle of the park. Eric Dier was another who was inspired by the Irishman’s performances, revealing in 2010 that he spent his youth idolising him and supporting the Red Devils as a result.

The Red Devils could certainly do with a player like Dier now. The Englishman received rave reviews last season for a collection of outstanding showings as the fulcrum of the Spurs midfield. With an impeccable timing in the tackle, perfect balance and possessing a wonderful array of passes, Dier stood out for the White Lane outfit and was one of the few Englishmen to have emerged from Euro 2016 with any semblance of credit.
