10 Chelsea Heroes Whose Careers Have Nosedived Since Leaving

10. Eidur Gudjohnsen

Having been pinched from Bolton Wanderers at the turn of the millenium, the six years that Icelandic centre-forward Eidur Gudjohnsen proceeded to spend at Stamford Bridge proved to be the most fruitful of his career. A Scandinavian journeyman who has amassed 13 different clubs in the last 20 years, it was in the blue of Chelsea where he truly left his legacy, notching 78 goals in over 200 appearances for the club. The fan€™s favourite was eventually forced out in the summer of 2006 due to the impending arrival of Andriy Shevchenko, but he left having contributed to the club€™s first two league titles in over 50 years, a League Cup success and a couple of Community Shields. While he went on to spend three seasons with Barcelona, winning La Liga and the Champions League in the process, his influence was marginal as he was restricted to substitute appearances more often than not. With Samuel Eto€™o, Thierry Henry and Lionel Messi forming a deadly three-pronged attack, Gudjohnsen found it nigh-on impossible to stake his claim for a starting spot, and amassed just ten league goals in total for the club. The veteran has since spent the last five years failing to recapture the form of his golden years at various different clubs, and looks ready to re-sign for old club Bolton Wanderers on a short-term deal.
