10 Concerns Man Utd Should Have Ahead Of The New Season
10. Is Louis van Gaal The Right Man?
Louis van Gaal was trumpeted as some sort of saviour when he was announced as David Moyes's successor earlier this summer. Following the latter's dismal spell in charge, just about anyone seemed a better choice of manager in comparison. Van Gaal's curriculum vitae is admittedly impressive - he's won league titles in three different countries - Holland, Germany and Spain, and has bossed some of the continent's biggest clubs, such as Bayern Munich and Barcelona. But he's no stranger to controversy. LVG is notoriously a hard man to please and when he's unhappy about something he isn't afraid to make his opinions known. Veteran Brazilian striker Giovanni, who played under van Gaal at Barcelona, once compared the Dutchman to Adolf Hitler, saying he is 'arrogant, proud and has a problem'. Other players have had a less-than-positive working relationship with the 62-year-old in the past as well. Ex-Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni once told the now infamous tale of how the new United boss once dropped his trousers in front of a shocked dressing room 'to prove he had the balls' to drop big names from his side. This is the type of personality United will have to live with next season and van Gaal's spell at Old Trafford could very easily be a combustible one. There's no guarantee it will work out for the former Netherlands chief at the Theatre of Dreams - he was, after all, sacked by Barcelona in 2003 with the Spanish giants on the cusp of relegation, while he left his post as Ajax's technical director one year later due to an internal conflict.
