10 Concerns Man Utd Should Have Ahead Of The New Season
7. The Over-Reliance On Luke Shaw At Left-Back
With Patrice Evra gone to Italy, and his understudy Alexander Buttner sold to Dynamo Moscow, new signing Luke Shaw is Manchester United's only recognised left-back. This is troublesome for United, particularly because Shaw is still only 19 and relatively inexperienced at the top levels of football. He had a stellar season with Southampton last season but as David Moyes found out, the Saints, just like the Toffees, are a different kettle of fish to the Red Devils. The teenager helped the south coast side to a club-best 8th place finish in the Premier League in 2013-14 but expectations are much higher at Old Trafford. Ideally, Shaw might have served as Evra's understudy this season to learn from the veteran Frenchman, but now there is suddenly a lot of pressure on his shoulders to hit the ground running straight off the bat. Should he be hit by poor form, injury or suspension, Louis van Gaal is going to be left woefully short of defensive options on the left-side of his defence and this is a massive problem for the club.
