Paul Gascoigne was known for a number of controversial goal celebrations throughout his playing days. In 1995, in a pre-season friendly against Steaua Bucharest, the then-Rangers star evoked fury with this flute gesture. After netting against the Romanians, Gascoigne evoked controversy by pretending to play the flute, a Loyalist symbol, taunting Ranger's old rivals Celtic, who have traditionally-Catholic fans. Three years later, in 1998, Gascoigne was again caught on camera playing an imaginary flute while he was warming up to come on as a substitute against Celtic in an Old Firm clash. The latter of those two incidents came after massive tensions in Northern Ireland after a spate of sectarian killings, and the England international was widely condemned for his behaviuor.
