10 Most Controversial Goal Celebrations Ever

3. Paul Gascoigne (vs Scotland, 1996)

Sandwiched in between each of Paul Gascoigne's 'flute salutes', the England star was again making waves with his outrageous goal celebrations in 1996. At Euro 96, Gascoigne rolled out his now-famous 'Dentist's Chair' celebration after scoring against Scotland. David Seaman saved a penalty, England broke, and the ball fell to Gascoigne, who duly chipped over Colin Hendry to help set up a win for the Three Lions. But it wasn't the scoreline that would be on the back pages of the newspapers the following morning, it was Gascoigne's ill-judged 'Dentist's Chair' celebration which saw the midfielder go to ground and teammates pour water from bottles into his mouth. The celebration was in reference to a drinking game Gazza and co. had been snapped taking part in during a tour of Hong Kong prior to the tournament, and remains one of the most iconic - and controversial - moments in the history of the England national football team. The memory of this celebration is further tainted by the unfortunate slump into alcohol addiction suffered by Gascoigne in later life.
