10 Controversies & Scandals That Rocked Liverpool

8. Craig Bellamy's Golf Club Assault

There are very few Premier League players more combustible than Craig Bellamy. The tough-talking, all-action Welshman was involved in a number of bust-ups and scrapes during his playing career, and perhaps the most infamous of which came in 2007, ahead of Liverpool's crucial Champions League game against Barcelona.

In days preceding the clash, the then-Liverpool man attacked teammate John Arne Riise with a golf club on a drunken night out in the Algarve, causing Riise to sustain bruises to his legs. The dispute reportedly arose because Riise refused to join in on signing karaoke and, days later, Bellamy was again on the back pages of the tabloids for all the wrong reasons after scoring against Barca, mocking the incident with his Liverpool colleague by swinging an imaginary golf club (above).

Bellamy would later admit to his shame over the controversy in his autobiography, 'GoodFella', in which he said of the incident: "I look back at what I did now and I cringe. It was pathetic. It was stupidity of the highest level. It was drunken, bullying behaviour."
