10 Controversies The UFC Wants You To Forget

10. Flying Teeth At UFC 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuzImQo7cdg There were a lot of things that weren't required in the first UFC event and mouth pieces were one of them. There were also no weight classes which is why in the first UFC fight ever a 400 pound sumo wrestler was facing a 214 pound savate fighter. Everyone who first saw the two combatants thought the the sumo wrestler Teila Tuli would simply squash the skinny Gerard Gordeau. This is why everyone was shocked to see Gordeau literally kick the teeth out of Tuli. The referee was even so shocked that he overstepped his authority at the time and stopped the fight. As mentioned above the two problems with the first fight in UFC 1 was that there were no mouth pieces required and to a lesser degree no weight classes. The second issue of no weight classes was taken care of at UFC 12, when there was a heavyweight division and a lightweight division that is now known as heavyweight and light heavyweight. More weight classes were introduced as time went on. The mouth piece issue however wasn't officially taken care of until UFC 28 when the Unified Rules was first introduced and the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board sanctioned an UFC event for the first time. However, because it was the first match of the UFC the memory is still burned into people's heads. Just the same it can be pointed out as improvement.
