10 Most Costly Mistakes In Man Utd History

4. Signing Juan Sebastian Veron

Phil Noble/PA Archive/Press Association ImagesPhil Noble/PA Archive/Press Association ImagesJuan Sebastian Veron became the most expensive player in British football history when he completed his £28.1 million move from Lazio to Manchester United in 2001 - and he will always be remembered as one of United's biggest ever transfer flops. The South American had difficulty adjusting to the fast-paced nature of the English Premier League, where he was not afforded the time on the ball he had been accustomed to in Italy. The midfielder scored just seven goals in 51 appearances for the club and, despite Sir Alex Ferguson's foul-mouthed tirade against the player's critics - calling journalists "f***ing idiots" and labelling Veron "a f***ing great player" - fans and pundits alike agreed the Argentinian was a transfer flop. Veron was sold to Chelsea after just two seasons at the club, where he bombed yet again, being described by The Times as one of the 50 worst transfers ever in Premiership history.
