They ended up coming agonisingly close to winning their first Premier League title. Having seemingly been out of the running at one point around Christmas time, a staggering run of 11 straight wins, including a 5-1 mauling of Arsenal and an epic 3-2 victory over City, saw them on the cusp of glory with three matches remaining. Jose Mourinho's weakened Chelsea team came to Anfield, with Rodgers knowing his side just needed to avoid defeat to keep them in pole position. After an extremely tight first-half, disaster struck right on the stroke on the half-time. Steven Gerrard, who was so brilliant and influential throughout the season, slipped in the middle of the park, allowing Demba Ba to race through and make it 1-0 in front of the Kop. Liverpool's young side struggled to respond from such a huge setback after the break, and Willian made it 2-0 in stoppage-time. Although they were mathematically still in the title race, you felt it was the day City won the league. The Reds' capitulation at Crystal Palace in their next game, blowing a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3, was the final nail in the coffin. It was harsh on Gerrard- they would never been in with a chance of winning the league without him - but it is something he will always have to live with.
