10 Embarrassments That Made Newcastle A Laughing Stock
9. Man Vs Horse And Wrecking Our Own City
When Barry Rogerson made sure he went down in the Newcastle history books for squaring up to and punching a police horse last year, it wasn't the first time the Toon Army had gone somewhat wild. Back in 1999, after Newcastle were beaten by Man Utd in the FA Cup Final, a 500-strong mob of Geordies converged in the Bigg Market and proceeded to wreck the area, clashing with police. As they smashed up phone-boxes, threw projectiles at officers and uprooted trees, the crowd allegedly shouted "Kill, kill, kill". Inevitably, just as happened in 2013, fans blamed non-fans for the destruction of the city and rioting, but the black and white shirts were pretty incriminating. And sadly the fact that it's happened twice says something about the worst element of Newcastle's fans.
