10 Most Expensive Transfer Flops In Premier League History

1. Andy Carroll

There have been huge wastes of money on this list, but the £35m transfer of Carroll from Newcastle to Liverpool tops the lot. Kenny Dalglish bought the then 22-year-old on Deadline Day of the 2011 January transfer window- unbelievably, Luis Suarez joined on the same day for over £10m less- and there were raised eyebrows as soon as the last-minute deal was completed. Reds fans were excited by the news, as you naturally are when a big-money transfer happens at your club, but it was soon very obvious that Dalglish that made a huge mistake. Like Aquilani, Carroll arrived at Anfield carrying an injury, and he didn't make his debut until March against United. His only two goals for Liverpool in 2010/11 came against City, and barring that one game, his performances were not good enough. Four goals in 35 league games the following season was an abysmal return, and it seemed staggering that Carroll was one of the most expensive players in history at the time. As soon as Rodgers arrived as manager in the summer of 2012, it was clear that the former Newcastle man wasn't part of the Northern Irishman's plans. Having spent a year on loan at West Ham, he signed for the east London club permanently in 2013. Goodness knows how much of the £35m Carroll actually paid back, in terms of performances and goals, but it would have been a miniscule amount to say the least. He has been the Premier League's most expensive transfer flop in the 22 years since its inception. We'd love to know your top 10 in the comments section.Follow Henry on twitter: @HenryJackson87
