10 Most Expensive Transfer Flops In Premier League History
10. Steve Marlet
In 2001, Fulham manager Jean Tigana decided to splash out £11.5m for the services of Marlet from Lyon. The French striker had not exactly been prolific at the Ligue 1 club by any means, scoring 13 times in 36 appearances, and it was evident fairly quickly that the west London club had spent way over the odds on him. Mohamed Al-Fayed, owner of the club at the time, was so angry about the signing that he took Tigana to court, claiming he had deliberately spent too much on him. "I won't let any crook destroy Fulham", he famously said. Marlet scored just 11 times in 54 appearances for Fulham, and looked distinctly average in the Premier League right up until being loaned out to Marseille in 2003. To put it bluntly, it was an absolutely shocking piece of business by the club, wasting a huge chunk of their transfer budget in the process. There are worse to come though, trust me.
