10 Footballers Who Claimed It Definitely Wasn't All About The Money

8. Sol Campbell

Towards the end of his illustrious career with Arsenal, Sol Campbell joined Portsmouth to see out the rest of his days as an ageing defender who had done and won almost everything at both club and international level. But his time there ended in disrepute as he sued the club for £1.7million over image rights and bonus payments. He left the club to join Notts County, claiming that he was taking a step down the divisions because of "where I am at the moment in my life" and that former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson also had a part to play in the decision. It obviously had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that County had been taken over by a rich, middle-eastern consortium and could offer him a lot of money to play in a black and white shirt in League 2. Campbell played one game for the Magpies before ending his contract by mutual consent, or otherwise known as taking everything he can and running in the opposite direction. Campbell re-joined Arsenal a year later to rekindle his old love affair, before ending his career at Newcastle United presumably dragging a very heavy wallet around.
