10 Footballers Who Really Didn't Deserve Winners Medals
3. Stephane Guivarc'h
France's 1998 World Cup-winning side was an exceptional one, full of world-class talent, and Les Bleus conquered all that stood before them. From Lilian Thuram, Marcel Desailly, Laurent Blanc and Bixente Lizarazu at the back, Zinedine Zidane and Youri Djorkaeff in midfield and youngsters Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet in attack, they were complete. That is barring one player, however. Stephane Guivarc'h was called up to the squad after a good season for Auxerre, but he was atrocious at the tournament. The then 27-year-old didn't register a single goal throughout, despite France bossing most games they played, and just never looked anything other than incredibly average. He was frequently substituted because of his ineffective displays, but he started most matches, including the final against Brazil. Guivarc'h was the only player who performed poorly for France, but such was the brilliance of those around him, it didn't really seem to matter. There were many better strikers in the tournament, and he should think himself incredibly lucky to be a World Cup winner. He wasn't fit to lace his teammates' boots, and his appalling short spell at Newcastle later in the same year highlighted his incompetence further.
