10 Footballers Who Returned To Their Former Clubs For Inflated Prices
7. Alan Shearer - Newcastle
Alan Shearer is a Premier League legend. The all-time leading goalscorer in England's topflight with 260 goals, Shearer is famed for his spells with Blackburn Rovers, where he won the Premiership, and Newcastle United. It was at Newcastle where the England hero really came to prominence, playing for the north east club for a decade scoring 148 goals along the way. He joined the Magpies in 1996 but may even have joined sooner, as he had successful trials with West Bromwich Albion, Manchester City and Newcastle in the early stages of his career. Instead he was offered, and accepted, a youth contract with Southampton in April 1986 and would not arrive at St James' Park for another ten years. And when he finally did, it cost Newcastle a one-time world record transfer fee of £15 million to land his services, even though they could have got him for nothing.
