10 Footballers To Play For Both Newcastle And Southampton

6. John Beresford

He formed a formidable partnership with Warren Barton, who played on the opposite side and was a constant attacking presence as the Magpies played fast, attacking football that saw them branded as "the Entertainers". One of the highlights of his time at Newcastle was scoring twice in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Croatia Zagreb in 1997. He, alongside a lot of the players from that era, has been fondly remembered on Tyneside and still has a good connection with the Newcastle fans. In 1998 Beresford signed for Southampton and enjoyed a good run of form under Dave Jones at The Dell. Unfortunately he suffered a terrible injury during the Saints' first game against Liverpool. He was ruled out for almost the entire 1998-99 season and never managed to rekindle the same form that he had shown during his first few appearances. He was loaned to Birmingham City in October 1999, but made just a single appearance in a defeat to Walsall before returning to The Dell.
