They paid £420,000 for Keegan who joined up with the talented Alan Ball, Phil Boyer, Mick Channon and Charlie George. Together they finished sixth in the league and seventh the following season, when the England International also won the PFA Player of the Year award. Keegan then fell out with McMenemy after he failed to strengthen the squad and sought a new challenge. Before the start of the 1982€“83 season he signed for Second Division Newcastle United for a fee of £100,000.
Keegan spent two seasons on Tyneside and earned himself legendary status as he helped them gain promotion form the Second Division. The attacker scored 42 goals in 78 games before retiring before the 1983-84 season. Despite saying that he would never go into coaching, on February 5th 1992, almost eight years after his final game as a player, Keegan returned to football as manager of Newcastle United. His seven years at the club saw him take the side from the bottom of Division 2 to almost winning the Premier League in the 1995-96 season.
