9. Aston Villa Vs. Newcastle (Premier League) - 24/05/2009

A game where Newcastle actually had to pick something up to stay in the Premier League. Heading into the final day of the 2008/09 season, two of four teams could have gone down. West Brom had already been relegated meaning Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Hull and Sunderland were battling it out against the drop. Ultimately, all four sides lost which meant that Boro and The Magpies were the teams to go down. We all know how Damien Duff's backside sent Newcastle into the Championship, but the performance on the day was nothing short of pitiful and rivals some of the utter dross churned out by John Carver and his staff since January. If Newcastle pushed and nicked a point in the game away at Villa they would have survived on goal difference. Who knows what state the club would be in today with so many over inflated wage packets dominating the agenda for a further 12 months. Relegation turned out to be one of the best things that has happened to Newcastle in recent years... Although the prospect of it happening again doesn't exactly make the mouth water.
