10 Glorious Scotland International Football Failures

9. Scotland 1-1 Iran (7 June 1978)

While the Peru result should have been a wake up call, the next game against Iran was at least a simple shot at redemption. Playing in their first World Cup, Iran were always going to be the whipping boys of the group, and it was just a matter of how many.

Scotland laboured through the first half, but were handed the lead as the whistle approached by an all-time hilarious own goal by Andranik Eskandarian. Even with that, a dismal second half display saw Iraj Danaeifard level it up after an hour, and secure Iran's first ever World Cup point, and their last for 20 years till a famous win over the United States.

Scotland were left needing goals against the Netherlands in the final game to qualify. Somehow, they turned up, with the legendary Archie Gemmill inexplicably making it 3-1 with a moment of brilliance to put Scotland a goal away from knocking the Dutch out and qualifying improbably. A quick Johnny Rep goal put any thoughts of a miracle to bed, but a 3-2 win was a glorious way to end a failure of a campaign.
