10 Glorious Scotland International Football Failures

8. Soviet Union 2-2 Scotland (24 June 1982)

After a 5-2 win over New Zealand got this campaign off to an almost suspiciously good start, Dave Narey's glorious toe poke put Scotland 1-0 up against Brazil. Maybe Ally MacLeod was just four years too early?

As was to be expected, Narey's early goal would just anger the Brazilians, who tore Scotland to pieces en route to a 4-1 win. No great shame against a wonderful Brazil team, but the Soviet Union's 3-0 win over New Zealand coupled with an unfortunate defeat to the Brazilians where they also took the lead, and held it to the last 15 minutes, gave the Red Army the goal difference advantage heading into the final group game, which would essentially be a knockout tie.

Joe Jordan's early goal gave Scotland the belief that they were finally going to progress to the second stage for the first time ever. A Soviet equaliser by Alexsandre Chivadze was then followed by a calamitous defensive howler between two of the best defenders in Europe at the time, that will ultimately live forever in the memory.

An innocuous long ball forward saw Willie Miller and Alan Hansen decide they were both going to deal with it, only to crash into each other like the Keystone Cops. Ramaz Shengelia picked up the loose ball to run through and score and send the Scots home. A quick Graeme Souness equaliser gave Scotland hope, but it wasn't enough.

Once again, it was the first plane home.
