10 Great Players Liverpool Missed Out On Signing

9. Nemanja Vidic

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher recently leaked the news that Rafa Benitez turned down the chance to sign Vidic in the mid 2000s, shortly before the Serbia star moved to bitter rivals Manchester United in January 2006. It proved to be a wonderful opportunity missed. Although the Reds' defence was very strong during that period, Vidic would have been a sensational capture. In his eight years at Old Trafford he cemented his place as one of the best centre-backs in Premier League history, and an all-time great United player. He won one Champions League, five Premier League titles and three League Cups under Sir Alex Ferguson, forming a wonderful partnership at the back with Rio Ferdinand in the process. Liverpool, meanwhile, won just two trophies during that time, an FA Cup in 2006 and a League Cup in 2012. Benitez had ups and downs in the transfer market during his time on Merseyside, and his failure to sign Vidic certainly falls into the latter. The 33-year-old would have been hugely popular on Merseyside, and basically a much better version of the erratic Martin Skrtel.
