10 Great Players Who Were Ruined By Spurs

2. Roberto Soldado

When Roberto Soldado signed for Spurs for a then club record fee of £26 million, he was seen as the striker the club had sorely needed for years. Spurs hadn't had a striker score twenty goals in a league season since Jurgen Klinsmann did it in 1994-95 (though Gareth Bale had notched 21 in 2012-13) and Soldado was seen as the man to do that again. He had an impressive record in La Liga, scoring 59 times in 101 games for Valencia and, prior to that, 29 times in 60 games for Getafe and had managed to earn his way in to the all conquering Spanish national side. However, his first season at Spurs saw him score just six league goals - four of which came from the penalty spot - and he has found himself out in the cold in this one (though that could be partially put down to his neck injury) so he has fallen from grace at White Hart Lane quite emphatically. It really hasn't helped matters that Soldado has been utilised mostly as a lone striker, when he tends to play better in a 4-4-2 formation.
