10 Greatest British Performances In Champions League History

4. Inter Milan 1-5 Arsenal 2003/04 Group Stage

Poor Inter Milan, they must not like North London teams, well judging by this anyway. But, frankly in the season of the 'Invincibles', this performance dwarfs them all. As we enter the last 4 entries, I would like to think we are in 'comeback season' and it starts with this. The Gunners hadn't recorded a win from their first three group games against Celta Vigo, Lokomotiv Moscow and perhaps most disappointing of all a 3-0 home loss against Inter Milan. Only a last gasp Ashley Cole goal against Celta Vigo kept their Last 16 hopes alive ahead of their last two games against Inter Milan and Lokomotiv Moscow. Inter by contrast were on 8 points and looked set to qualify for the Last, especially considering their impervious record against English teams in Italy- how that would all go up in smoke! Thierry Henry got things rolling with an 18th minute goal, but Inter struck back with a deflected equaliser from striker Christian Vieri. After half time, Freddie Ljungberg restored the Gunners lead before a blistering last 10 minute spell saw Henry grab his second and Edu and Robert Pires add their names to the scoresheet. It was a defeat that had varying consequences for both teams; Arsenal got the win against Lokomotiv they needed to top the group, but Alberto Zaccheroni's men conceded an 85th equaliser to Dynamo Kiev and had to settle for UEFA Cup football come the new year.
