10 Man Utd Players Who Did Nothing For Club (But Excelled For Their Country)

10. Robbie Savage

A product of the Manchester United academy, Robbie Savage is one face that the club doesn€™t like to splash on DVD box sets of €˜The Class of 92€™. Both the Welshman and the club have tried to distance themselves from each other over the last 20 years, with the former Leicester City midfielder having gone on to enjoy a spectacularly average career floating between mid-table sides in the Premier Leagues. Let€™s just say that the tough-tackling hardman wasn€™t an advert for the fabled academy that produced the likes of Paul Scholes and David Beckham. Considering he made a grand total of zero appearances for the Red Devils, he really couldn€™t have made any less of an impact on the first-team as a fresh-faced 19 year old all those years ago. However, once he broke free of the club and signed forms with Crewe Alexandra, opportunities began to arise - including a phone call from the Welsh manager Bobby Gould. Savage went on to play 39 times for his country, and while his nation never qualified for any major tournament, he received the honour of succeeding Gary Speed as captain in 2004. However, the captaincy would be a short-lived one as he called to an end his nine-year stint in the international set-up the following year, following a public spat with manager John Toshack. While it might be a stretch to claim that Savage excelled on the international scene, considering the lack of progress in terms of qualifications for tournaments, leading his country out at the Millenium Stadium was probably a distant dream for a tough-tackling kid struggling to establish himself amongst the €˜Class of 92€™.
