10 Memorable Arsenal Goals Scored By Ordinary Players

3. Andrei Arshavin vs Barcelona - February 2011

Following on from Julio Baptista's antics, Arshavin silenced Liverpool supporters two months after his arrival into English football with an incredible four-goal salvo during a thrilling 4-4 Premier League draw. However, at the time Arshavin had just come off the back of an insatiable Euro 2008 tournament and had been linked with the likes of Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid for the best part of a year. He had started well at the Emirates Stadium, and had so far not turned into the broken, lazy, shell of a player that he would soon become. Instead, the memorable moment to focus on arrived when he truly was cast into the shadows at the Emirates, with Wenger no longer trusting the Russian maverick following months of poor form and performances of indifference. The Arshavin who had torn the Liverpool defence to shreds seemed an eon ago by the time February 2011 rolled around, but the month included arguably Arshavin's finest moment, as he fired home the winner against Barcelona. With David Villa having given the Catalans a first-half lead, Robin van Persie brought the Emirates to its' feet with 12 minutes remaining with a shot that somehow eluded goalkeeper Victor Valdes, setting the stage for a grandstand finale. The Russian had been thrown on to replace Alex Song for the last half hour, and while looking inevitably anonymous, he arrived late in the box to smash home two years of frustration, steering home Samir Nasri's inch-perfect cross into the bottom corner. Of course, Arsenal went on to lose the second leg, but that winning goal over what many tout as one of the greatest club teams of all time will certainly be one for the Russian's career highlights reel.
