Hailed as the successor to legendary German strikers of the past, we're going to have to wait a while to see if young Timo Werner can really come good on all that hype. At this World Cup, the 21-year-old simply seemed out of his depth. His tender age partly excuses his poor performances, but German fans and football fans in general were expecting a lot better of the RB Leipzig man.

He was part of German's excellent triumph at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and scored three goals to help his nation qualify for the 2018 World Cup, but, like many of his teammates, appeared lost and confused when the group games got underway.

Werner struggled to have any decent shots as he repeatedly failed to show any urgency to actually get in the box and try to score goals. A peripheral figure in a shockingly awful German side, the youngster will want to put this World Cup behind him as quickly as possible and fans have to hope it won't have shaken his confidence too badly.
