10 Most Famous World Cup Penalty Misses

4. Chris Waddle (1990)

1990 could have been England's year. The squad was filled with stars, from Peter Shilton in goal to Gary Lineker up front, with the likes of Stuart Pearce, Paul Gascoigne, John Barnes, and David Platt filling out the eleven. Chris Waddle was also one of England's brightest stars at the time, but his tournament would be remembered for one fateful moment in the semi-final penalty shootout.

The Three Lions had done fantastically to make it all the way to the last four and had held out for a 1-1 draw with their old enemy: West Germany. The game went to penalties, with Lineker, Beardsley and Platt scoring the first three and giving England fans hope that maybe, just maybe, this team could go all the way.

Then, Stuart Pearce famously sent his kick right down the middle and into the keeper for England's first miss. The Germans netted their fourth penalty and Chris Waddle needed to score to keep England in it. Waddle stepped up to the spot looking like a man who just wanted to get it all over with and that's exactly what he did, sending his penalty into orbit and giving the Germans a ticket to the final.
