The Netherlands€™ most heated derby encounter is the battle between the biggest clubs of Amsterdam and Rotterdam which has been infused with grave violence ever since the first meeting of the sides, way back in 1921.

The most serious incident came in 1997, when an Ajax fan was beaten to death during a clash between the two firms (The Sport Club Feyenoord and The F-Side) in a planned brawl in the outskirts of Amsterdam.

The fatal event led to the away fans of each side being banned from the next two fixtures between the rivals and a far more efficient police presence on match days.

The new legislation and prevention techniques proved ineffective, however, as brawls between the two Dutch firms continued to occur on a regular basis, forcing both clubs to reach an agreement in 2008 with the Dutch FA to ban away supporters from the fixture for the foreseeable future.
